We caught up with Stuart Sharpless, co-director at Decorus, to find out more…

You recently launched your new liquid metal finishes. Can you tell us more about this exciting process?

We are very excited to launch this as it’s a relatively new technology. Essentially any type of substrate can be coated in real metal and is suitable for both interior and exterior applications. An additional major advantage of the liquid metal coating process is that it adds very little weight and, therefore, is in particular demand where this is a major consideration.

All textures, colours and effects can be varied and the team can also work with clients to create bespoke finishes and textures. At the moment the standard metals include bronze, brass, gold brass, nickel, white gold, zinc, aluminium, tin, copper and white bronze, but metals can be mixed or layered to create an almost infinite palette.

With multiple finishes available, have you seen a trend towards a particular finish recently?

While Decorus works with a wide range of finishes that aim to create a timeless look, gilding has been a technique that we have been asked for more. Gold is experiencing a resurgence in popularity as it creates a subtle yet luxurious aesthetic. We have just launched 4 new collections that are inspired by the art deco era and gold gilding features alongside marble and granite.

Where and how are your furniture pieces made?

I set up Decorus with my co-director Richard Hart and we, along with a team of skilled craftsmen, design and manufacture the furniture at our workshop in Hertfordshire. Each of our products is hand crafted and finished to the very highest standards and our products are frequently specified by many of the World’s leading interior designers and architects.

We pride ourselves on the excellent relationships we have with interior designers, and offer creative design solutions that continue to enhance prestigious and notable properties around the globe. We can offer a tailored solution to almost any manufacturing requirement, backed up with full technical drawing packages and three-dimensional renderings if required.

What some of the key highlights of the Decorus catalogue?

One of the unique aspects of Decorus is that all our furniture is made in our UK based workshop and every piece is hand finished by our team of skilled craftsmen. We work closely with interior designers on bespoke commissions and projects as all of our standard collection can be customised. We also offer a totally bespoke design and manufacturing service – a recent commission was the champagne bar for The Rosebery Room at the Mandarin Oriental, finished in liquid metal.

Finally, we have developed a new collection called Momentum which is a collection of 36 of our best-selling designs that are available at 3-5 day lead times, perfect for last minute orders, catering for those on high-end residential, commercial and hospitality projects. We extended this collection in February and it now has 24 different finishes to choose from, allowing for customisation to suit clients’ requirements.

What can we expect to see in 2016?

2016 will be a busy year for us. As mentioned, we have just launched 4 new collections at London Design Week, which are more classic designs inspired by mid-century and art deco periods. We are continuing to work on developing new finishes and designs to ensure we are at the forefront of design.

Four new ranges: Arlington, Berkeley, Brompton and Mayfair.
