2016 sees the London Design Fair become the umbrella brand for Tent London and Super Brands London as well as other international shows, marking their 10th year. We spoke to Director and Founder, Jimmy MacDonald, to find out this year’s highlights.

How will you be celebrating your 10 year anniversary?

The whole show will be a grand celebration. We’re so proud of the 10 years that we’ve been highlighting new talent in design and bringing it into the heart of the country – and this year we’re looking forwards, not backwards.
We’ll be hosting our big Thursday night party, with many of the country pavilions and galleries hosting their own events throughout the night. This is a chance to take a moment and appreciate how far we’ve all come. Both the designers and the fair itself – we’ve grown up together.

You’ve recently rebranded from Tent London, why did you decide to do this, and what does the new name mean for you?

Tent London and Super Brands London have nurtured the sole aim to provide London’s most ambitious and pertinent design trade fairs – and fulfilling this aim on every occasion over the past ten years. It’s is now time to combine brand and function and present the new “London Design Fair”.

For our new name we decided on the ‘London Design Fair’, in part drawing inspiration from Europe, a region where we carry out a great deal of business and where ‘Fair’ is a familiar term.

The London Design Fair is an umbrella brand for Tent London and Super Brands London alongside the other shows we host, for example 100% Norway and the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland. With the addition of the third floor space at the Old Truman Brewery, we will be hosting further group shows, country pavilions and themed exhibitions, affording these key facets even greater visibility.

What are you most excited about at London Design Fair this year?

We’re really excited to be launching the British Craft Pavilion this year – a showcase of 25 craftspeople from across the British Isles. These designers were specially selected by the Crafts Council & the fair to represent the best of British craft and innovation. It seemed obvious to examine where Britain is in the worldwide craft movement, and we were delighted when the Crafts Council came our way because it gave us the opportunity to visit that component in our show.

The British Craft Pavilion includes fantastic work, such as that from Stuart Akroyd.

The “This is India” pavilion is the first Indian design showcase at the London Design Festival ahead of the 2017 UK-India Year of Culture. The pavilion includes twelve emerging and established India-centric designers and brands across product, textile and furniture.

Another of London Design Fair’s most exciting new initiatives is the “Trentino Collaborations“. The Trentino Collaborations connect four British designers, including Max Lamb and Sebastian Cox, with four Trentino-based manufacturers to create new products for retail which will debut at the show.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The best part of my job is traveling the world to unearth the freshest and best design talent. One week I could be in New York, the next in Taipei or Stockholm – scouring the globe for talented designers who deserve to be featured on the world stage.
Being one of the more internationally focused destinations at the festival gives London Design Fair a chance to really stand out and provide an inspiring experience for 25,000 attendees as well as concrete, career-defining possibilities for exhibitors.

Like Jimmy, Charlotte Frances London take inspiration from all over the world for their prints. Their best-selling Tulum print is a Mexican-inspired design.
